Transformation of urban space based on the superblock concept: international experience and the Ukrainian context

Annotation.The article is devoted to the scientific, theoretical, and practical substantiation of the superblock concept as a tool for transforming urban space in the context of contemporary environmental, transport, and social challenges. Based on an analysis of international case studies (Barcelona, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Vienna, London, Berlin, etc.), it is demonstrated that superblocks can reduce the intensity of transit traffic, noise levels, and concentrations of air pollutants while simultaneously improving the quality of public spaces and promoting the development of sustainable modes of mobility. The study employs an interdisciplinary approach that combines transport and spatial modelling (GIS), comparative-geographical, and descriptive-analytical methods. The empirical base includes spatial-planning data from Valencia and selected Ukrainian cities (Kyiv, Odesa, Kamianets-Podilskyi). A phased model for implementing superblocks is proposed, oriented toward local morphology, mobility patterns, housing accessibility, and the integration of green infrastructure. The results provide a methodological foundation for the development of urban policies aimed at enhancing the resilience and climate adaptability of Ukrainian cities, making the superblock concept a promising tool for sustainable development.
